Shows We Love: Once Upon A Time

OUAT S7 Promo poster Med

I’d just finished watching Episode Three of Season 7, Once Upon A Time on Hulu. As usual the previews for Episode Four were not included and of course no clip of that exists on HULU either. So I decided to hit YouTube because of course ABC has thought of this yes?

Opening up Google, my eye immediately snatches the top of Cinderella/Jacinda’s head. Obvi’s I was clicking it. The article from Deadline.com basically quantified what we all knew was bound to happen.

Proclaiming to the world,

‘Once Upon a Time’ & ‘Marvel’s Inhumans’ Slip To Demo Ratings Lows”

Nellie Andreeva who covers TV for the site states,

” ABC’s female-friendly Once Upon a Time (0.5 adults 18-49 rating, 2.52 million total viewers) that tied for the biggest demo drop (-0.2) on Friday to hit a new *L+SD series low.”

Once Upon A Time’s dip in ratings is just another symptom of all Season 7 shows, few survive to air a season 8.

Move it to Friday at 8pm when everyone is out doing stuff, watch the ratings plummet OUAT S7 EP 1 - Regina and Orig Henryand the hand them the axe. It’s not shocking, but foreboding of one of my favorite shows.  (and I’m still coming to grips with the end of Scandal)

The storyline though partially recycled actually has a creative twist with elements of the orignal show that we remember and loved.  Much how Snow White and the Evil Queen shared a sordid past that fueled Regina’s ire for Snow.  “Cinder” Ella has somehow played a hand in the death albeit a temporary one, of Lady Tremaine’s daughter Anastasia.

Lady Tremaine has figured out how to save the girls very last breath  (That’s new), She conceals her in aOUAT S7 Ep 1 - Cinderella Henry Carriage 1 coffin much like Regina kept Daniel in MythHaven.

Keeping the flashback’s we need to understand why any of this is happening, Once has so far mirrored the love story of Snow White and Prince Charming. Back in Hyperion Heights, Lucy struggles to help her parents remember themselves much like Henry had to convince Emma that she was indeed the savior.

OUAT S7 EP 3 - Ella and Tiana 1This Season definitely has seen a more ethnic presence in the cast, selecting both Cinderella a main female lead while making Tiana (who was black anyway) a series regular and what I’ll take a guess at is Hyperion Height’s version of either Ruby or Belle and with the inclusion of the Frog Princess there’s plenty more coming our way.

I for one would be crushed if they cancelled Once Upon A Time.  I’m invested in where this goes and need for Mr. Horowitz to stretch his brain to its limits until he has managed to Oncify every last fairy tale we can think of !

At least until Henry has kids, then maybe stop…

Just a side-note the article doesn’t account for all alternative viewings such as HULU and other streaming services only live and same day coverage.

So who knows, maybe they’ll make a deal with Netflix?

*L+SD – Live and Same Day rating

*Oncify and Obvi’s (obviously) are both made up and trademarked by Blu Moon Fiction

#ShowsWeLove:OUAT Reboot

Not many shows survive a reboot. The old fans are just way too attached to the original cast to care about what new story you’re trying to tell. Change the day and time and you’re basically letting the world know you’re about to cancel the show.

So no wonder we all trembled in fear when half the cast of Once Upon A Time quit and the show time moved to Friday’s at 8pm.

We start this season with a jump to 18-year-old Henry heading through a portal with Regina bidding him farewell. He and a very flustered looking Cinderella are rushing headfirst towards each other on a strip of road in a “New Realm”

Henry is much older now and we understand that this will be a new version of the show entirely by Henry’s farewell to Regina, “There are dozens of stories across the world but I’m the only me” I’m paraphrasing obviously, but it prepares you for when you see another Cinderella.

A fact I’m still on the fence about. On the one hand a reboot means you can do whatever you please however, I vaguely remember Cinderella being one of their first stories.

This new spin with Cinderella as Henry’s true love and the Evil Stepmother as the villain (a great choice btw) definitely let’s us know we’re not in Storeybrooke anymore.

Recycling the first episode of the series is a risk. I’m not sure if I like it yet. Henry as the “true believer” doesn’t seem to believe Lucy very much very a la Emma if i do say so myself.

Grown up Henry is a blocked writer who hasn’t been able to write anything since his debut Once Upon A Time. He’s surprised by a little girl claiming to be his daughter.

Sound familiar?

Apparently Hyperion Heights is the new version of Storeybrooke, where everyone is trapped without magic. The neighborhood is being gentrified scattering the original (Storeybrooke) characters across the world.

In fairytale land Henry was roofied  by a menacing looking Alice who seems to be working for Rumple. Her warning to Henry was that he wasn’t in his story. Yet he and Cinderella seem to be destined for each other.

I wonder what happens to Violet that Cinderella us his true love?

The episode ends with a promotion for our favorite neighborhood Captn. Hook who gets teamed up with Rumplestilitskin/ Weaver.

Roni/Regina decides to not sell her bar to the wicked stepmother Madame Bellfrey.  Her triumphant monologue pans through the city while we see the slight change in each of our characters.

I’m looking forward to seeing how this plays out.

Operation Glass Slipper is a go!

#ShowsWeLove – American Horror Story: S.7, Ep 1 (Election Night)

AHS Season 7 is back!!! Just in time to endure our very scary reality of Donald Trump as president. Even Ryan Murphy saw the horror in this storyline.

Ally (Sarah Paulson) and Ivy (Alison Pill) are a same sex married couple watching the results at at neighbors house. Highstrung Ally has a series of phobias that the election results exacerbate.

A fear of clowns (coulrophobia), Fear of Blood (hemophobia), Fear of holes or porous surfaces (Trypophobia) and enclosed spaces  (claustrophobia).

All of which we’ll all see at nausium in each episode. Starting with a comic book of Twisty the killer clown, which shows both blood and a clown.

A few melt downs later and Ally is seeing her shrink again.

In some other part of town Kai (Evan Peters), a blue haired basement dweller

who obviously voted for Trump is celebrating via cheesepuff facial and comb-over. There we see Chanel#3… I mean, Winter (Billie Lourd) sulking over the results. She dropped out of Vassar to help Hill win and all she got was a cheesepuff stained comforter as her brother gloated over his victory.

After a weird pinky promise in which he asks some questions a brother shouldn’t be asking his sister. He goes to take his insanity out on the world. She goes to get a job as a baby sitter. (Would you let her watch your kids?

As suspected though she passed the interview she shows Ozzie snuff films and takes him towards danger when it arises.

Kai is really into fluids tossing coffee on Ally and Ivy and a pee filled condom on some migrant workers who kick his butt. Unfortunately it was a set-up.

Ozzie is left with creepy Winter, while Ally and Ivy taste the menu for their restaurant. Some clowns pull up in an ice cream truck and murder the Chens, Clockwork Orange style. Winter suggests they check it out and Ozzie sees everything.

Ally’s hallucinations about clowns and bloody krumpets ends dinner early. When Oz tells his mom’s what happens Winter says he dreamed it and gives them a copy of the Twisty comic.

But the Chens  were murdered and something very bad is about to happen. I can’t wait!

What did you think of the Season 7 premiere?

#ShowsWeLove: Dark Matter

Space… the final frontier

Gotta level with you here, I absolutely love fantasy but sci-fi and me are not good friends. Star Trek to  Star Wars I just couldn’t get into the great beyond like I could the magical world. Maybe it’s because space is real and there are clear rules and guidelines, maybe it’s because I prefer the unpredictability of magic to science I can’t say for certain.

I will say this, SyFy  seems to have a knack for writing shows I’ll watch. They created a space series I not only binge watched, but was truly disappointed a third season hadn’t made it to the streaming site.

It started with a brief period of withdrawal. I like to completely immerse myself in a show, internet stalk the cast and crew, find our what other projects they’re doing. This usually happens AFTER I’ve watched a series with 4 or more seasons.

There is a period of mourning when I realise it’s too soon to rewatch the show but i have yet to decide on a new series. Lost Girl was just that show. Dark Matter. My antidote.

Both shows are Canadian  (yay Canada!) Both appear on SyFy. Dark Matter, is based on the comic book of the same name. Though I have not read the comic series the show bumps it up on my to-do list.

Dark  Matter. Opens with a group of six people waking up on a ship called the Raza.  No one has any memory of how they got there or what they were doing before they woke up. They name themselves One through Six and work on reclaiming their identities.

I did hear word the shows third season premiered June 9, 2017. I have yet to catch an episode but I’ll keep looking. The first 2 seasons which are pretty action packed and full of angst are of course of Netflix. The fight scenes were my favorite.

Have you seen Dark Matter? Who was your favorite character? Let us know in the comments below!

#ShowsWeLove: The Strain

At a child’s birthday party all the adults I know usually clamor to one room, forfeiting the house to the dominant species…The Children.

Little Miss Jada’s 9th birthday barbeque was no different. My friend and comic book sensei also happens to be a professional grade chef. Our domain…the kitchen.

As always after several platters of food have been devoured by our offspring. Plastic cups refilled again, the nerdlings within steer our conversation to the latest movie trailer releases.

A few remakes later and we’re talking about Hulu. The streaming service offers a variety of cable programs currently on air. The Strain happens to be one of those shows.

I grew up reading Bram Stoker’s Dracula and Anne Rice (pick a book I’ve read it). So Guilermo Del Toro’s The Strain brings back a traditional sense of what a vampire was for me.

Set to the theme of a viral outbreak backed by an ancient evil, it’s a great show if you’re into zombie apocalypse shows. Just replace the zombies by semi cognizant vampires and you have a show that has spanned three seasons.

We follow Dr. Ephraim Goodweather, head of the CDC’s New York-based Canary Project, on the case of an airplane that lands with everybody on board dead. His team discovers a viral outbreak, very similar to that of vampirism.  As the virus ravages the city Goodweather, his team and a group of the city’s residents wage a war that could hold humanity’s fate in its hand.

Original a book trilogy, The Strain officially aired on July 13, 2014 with the fourth and final series airing Sunday, July 16th, 2017.

The show’s executive producers include Oscar-nominated writer Guillermo del Toro and Emmy-winning producer Carlton Cuse.

Have you seen The Strain? What did you think?

My Netflix Addiction: Happy Tree Friends

happy tree friends

I am obsessed with cartoons. If I could make a living doing voice overs I would. While I work on my sound reel, let’s talk about this cartoon. I should start by saying this is not a cartoon for kids. In fact it probably isn’t a cartoon most adults would like. I have a morbid sense of humor.

In old school Tom & Jerry fashion (one of my faves) this show offers no messy dialogue, only squeaks and murmurs from our doomed animal cast. I won’t ruin it for you check out this clip below!

My Netflix Addiction: 13 Reasons Why

13 reasons why

*The content featured in this article could be seen as graphic, I am discussing a program which showed strong sexual content, minor abusing drugs and alcohol, strong language and rape. Basically you should not be reading this without permission if you are a minor.  Also spoiler alert.

I’d heard mixed reviews from friends, coworkers, Facebook followers people who’ve read the book and new it existed prior to watching the series. When I started watching i’d understood that i’d either feel a sense of kindred belonging or utter disdain for the late Hannah Baker.

Instead I felt myself feeling a both annoyed by her naivete and sad no one stepped in to save the histrionic young woman. Hannah Baker committed suicide by slicing her wrists in the bathroom tub, she’d endured 2 years of torture after moving to a new town and a new school. Sadly this was her only way out.

Before committing the final deed, she’d recorded 13 cassette tapes, (yes they still exist in 2017!) and confessed her sins and the sins of those she felt were most responsible for driving her to end her life.  Some would consider it a bit pious of her.

I at times agreed, the police would have and could have stepped in to bring justice to the stalker and the rapist. (i’m sure the later did face criminal charges once his confession was released.)  Some would suggest she merely get over the other teenage shenanigans.

I believe she could’ve used benefited from having a real counselor who could’ve guided her through a few minor struggles, had any adult been able to offer her refuge she could’ve had a chance.

My beloved would say she needed “thicker skin”  The series as a whole was pretty interesting and I would even consider watching a second season if they bothered to continue the show. The book was a stand alone project but who knows Season One left room for a 13 Reasons Why I shot up the school or 13 Reasons Why I Ran Away.
