I stumbled upon this series completely by accident. My mother is the biggest Harry Potter Fan I know. One Christmas long after the series had ended while waiting for either the fifth or sixth movie I was looking for a gift for my mother the book worm. To my shock this series has nothing to do with Harry Potter. In fact the only thing the two series have to do with each other is that both books reference Flamel and his elixir of life.

This collection also has two stand – alone novellas. Making it an eight or nine part series.

The series written by Irish author Michael Scott delves into the realm of mythology featuring a pending apocalypse magical twins. As far as stats go this book is a  young adult thriller-fantasy fiction. The books have been nominated for various teen literary and reader’s awards. The film rights to the series have been bought by AMPCO Films.

I love my epic books and this series shows a world being thrust into the brink of extinction by ancient deities with even more backstory than we ever knew. I could say Michael Scot is one of my favorites off of this series alone. This series features Egyptian mythology as well as American folklore blended perfectly to give way to this fantastical tale of incarnations  and a of literal good and evil ensures this book if crammed with fantasy elements.wp-image-544243400

The Alchemyst, focuses on the lives of Sophie and Josh Newman, fraternal twins whose boring summer jobs and regular lives working for the Fleming’s comes to a shocking and adventurous end with the arrival of the mysterious and menacing, Dr. John Dee.

Dr. Dee engages the bookstore owner, Nick Fleming, in a battle of magic attempting to steal an ancient book, The Book of Abraham the Mage (a.k.a. the Codex) from him. Dee snatches the book from Josh’s hands, but Josh holds onto the last two pages. In his anger  Dr. Dee  kidnaps Nick’s wife Perry Fleming and imprisons her on Alcatraz Island.

The Newman’s’ discover that Nick Fleming is actually the immortal Nicholas Flamel. A gifted alchemist who’s spent the larger part of his life in secret as the sole creator of the elixir of life. The twins reluctantly embrace their gifts and their destiny as the keys to either save the world or destroy it.

When you mention the fate of the world rests on someone’s shoulder’s  the next question of course would be from who? This book has many villains all worse than the next. Our heroes run into every bad guy imaginable from reincarnated train robbers to eons old goddesses with a grudge.

If you haven’t seen why I love this series yet. Go read it for yourself. This series is great for lovers of magic and mythology.  The Secrets of the Immortal Nicholas Flamel is a great series to add to your shelf especially if you’re a fan of The Sorrowline, Roam, the The Septimus Heap Collection.
