I’ve been hearing so much about this book lately that when I saw it was available for purchase, I had to snag it. Turns out this book happens to be an Advanced Reader’s Copy someone let slip through their fingers. I’m more than happy to make it a part of my home library. Song of Blood & Stone by L. Penelope is the highly anticipated first novel in the Earthsinger Chronicles and I should be finished reading it by Sunday night.

I finally finished reading Tithe by Holly Black. A book I started back in late January and hadn’t had time to finish before this month. It’s definitely a book I had to power through but once I got into the story I was super happy I stayed with it. I am a chronic, ship-jumper when it comes to stories I don’t enjoy.  The final moments in the book were enough to inspire me to add the other books in the series to my TBR list. You can check out the review for Tithe here.

What do you think you’ll read next?

There are so many options, books on my TBR list, books that are on my bookshelf that I haven’t added to by TBR list, the occassional Book Haul to muddy things up. I recently purchased a steampunk fairytale anthology that i’m dying to sink my teeth into so maybe that will be my next read.

It’s funny this is the second week in a row the #AmReading book is actually one I haven’t started just yet. I will be reading it right after I divide my pages. Tithe by Holly Black has been a part of my library for at least a year.

It was part of a book binge I experienced right after breaking my reading slump. I gorged my shelves with fantasy and came across this “modern faerie tale”

I’m said to meet 16- year – old Kaye, officially making this my first YA book of the year. Her nomadic lifestyle amidst her mom’s rockband is disrupted and she ends up in NJ in the middle of a faerie firefight.

It definitely looks interesting. 331 pages with an excerpt for White Cat (another book I haven’t read yet) inside.

What did you recently finish reading?

I finished reading Confessions of an Ugly Stepsister by Gregory Maguire on Monday. While writing the review which you can read here, I learned about the Disney adaptation of the book featuring Stockard Channing as Margarethe ten Broek Fisher Van den Meer. As expected Disney’s adaptation glazed over the murder, threw in some actual magic, a fairy godmother and made Clara more agreeable and less like an unwilling child bride.

What do you think you’ll read next?

At this point I’ve had enough of Cinderella and her sisters, though Maguire has written a spin to Alice in Wonderland, and I haven’t read the ready of The Wicked Years yet. I’m actually considering starting the Lunar Chronicles by Marisa Meyer.

confessions of ugly stepsister

While writing this post, I must admit I haven’t actually started reading this book yet. I probably will have read a few pages, once this has been published.

I’m finally getting around to reading Confessions of an Ugly Stepsister by Gregory Maguire author of “The Wicked Years,” series. Based on the children’s story Cinderella. Maguire uses his typical flair to retell the classic tale from the perspective of the sisters left behind.

The story is set in 17th century Holland and since I’m not familiar with it at all. I’ll just have to read on to find out more about it.

I finished reading Kindred by Octavia Butler, yesterday afternoon. The fantastical tale of a modern woman of the 70s transported to the antebellum South to save the life of a young boy named Rufus. Our heroine endures, the systematic abuse of the time period while trying to complete her mission and return home. This book will infuriate you, bring tears to your eyes and have you cheering for the unspeakable. But if you read it, you’ll be happy you did.

I also recently finished Hart’s Hope by Orson Scott Card. I respect that man as a pioneer in the speculative fiction genre but regretfully disliked this book a lot. The reasons are endless and you can read more about them here. Definitely check it out for yourself before making your final opinions.

What do you think you’ll read next?

I’m honestly not sure I’ve been meaning to finish reading American Gods by Neil Gaiman, but I also wouldn’t mind starting a new series…decisions….

What are you currently reading?

I am halfway through Orson Scott Card’s Hart’s Hope. I discovered the book while reading Card’s How to Write Science Fiction and Fantasy. While Card explained his worldbuilding techniques he also described how he came to design the world in Hart’s Hope. How a simple mishap on his mao created the world and its characters. Set during a time of wizards, Kingdoms and the introduction of Monotheistic religion  (Christianity) the book seems to be about a town who’s monarch is thwarted replaced and exiled continuously through means of divine intervention and sorcery. So far the story is shaping up to be an interesting one though almost halfway through I’m not sure who I’m rooting for.

What did you recently finish reading?

I finished reading “How to Write Science Fiction and Fantasy by Orson Scott Card. This book is the reason I started reading Hart’s Hope. Prior to buying this book I was oblivious to who OSC was but I’m better off for having read it and was able to complete the outline for my very own novel.

What do you think you’ll read next?

I am as always lately unsure of what the next book will be. On the one hand starting a new stand-alone novel is always fun. A completed story that doesn’t warrant a new bookshelf though I did purchase quite a few series last year that I’ve been looking over. We shall see.

What are you currently reading?

How to write sf and fanatsyI  am trying my hand at multi-reading. I’m preparing for grad school so I’m reading through Orson Scott Card’s How to Write: Science Fiction & Fantasy a light read with lots of information for aspiring writers. This book is only one in a series of genre reference books published by Writers Digest.  Card is the author of Ender’s Game a book I haven’t read but seen in movie form. The four book series with mini A Madness So Discreet– novella attachments are enough to add at least eleven novels and ten short stories to my TBR list.

I’m also trying to make it through A Madness So Discreet by Mindy McGinnis.  I’ve tried reading this book a few times, each time abandoning it for something more my cup of tea.  However, I’m noticing that this book has been making ti’s rounds aroung the blogosphere and it was featured in a post I was reading a few days ago. I insist on completing this book and returning it to it’s rightful owner…. Yup it’s borrowed.

What did you recently finish reading?

I just finished reading Artemis Fowl: The Last Guardian by Eoin ColferI feel a great sense of accomplishment both finishing the full series as well as having documented the reading and reviews as described in my 2017 reading challenge. Yay me! Also that puts me only nine books away from completing my 2017 reading challenge and it’s still NOV.

The Artemis Fowl series was a great read. The characters lived and grew with each new book and the final battle really put the icing on this series for me. There’s a full review of the book here, if you haven’t  read that yet.

What do you think you’ll read next?

Once I finish reading Madness and the Reference book I fully plan to return my attention to reading The Mortal Instruments: City of Bones by Cassandra Clare.  It made it my Nov TBR list but I have yet to open a single book from the series. It hasn’t been forgotten, I just may need ro finish out the series in December which is perfect as the Buddy read with Do You Even Geek  will probably be 2018’s project anyway.

What are you currently reading?

I  am currently reading Artemis Fowl: The Last Guardian by Eoin Colfer. It’s the final book of the Artemis Fowl series and I’m a little past the halfway mark in the story. I usually feel a little bit of melancholy when i’m nearing the end of the series, and don’t get me wrong it’s one of my favorites. But…I’m eager to complete and catch up to my book goal for 2017 before December is over.

What did you recently finish reading?

I just finished reading Artemis Fowl: The Atlantis Complex  also by Eoin Colfer. I know there’s not a lot of variation and I’m not triple booking it, but I do enjoy keeping with a series and this one had eight books in it. This book is one of my favorites in the series followed closely by book #5: The Lost Colony. You can check out the review for that here.

a63b4207f8c7e3c463e04756ae1af807470776694.jpg

What do you think you’ll read next?

Had you asked me a few days ago I would’ve said without a doubt I’d be starting The Mortal Instruments: City of Bones. That may not be the case anymore, I recently got quite a few books for my birthday and the November book Haul came a bit early so I’m slightly distracted by pending reads. I also have a book from my friend Breanna that I borrowed intending to read and then never got around to. So given my current options I’ll be stopping to read the stand – a – lone. A Madness So Discreet by Mindy McGinniss my borrowed book from Do You Even Geek.
